Ride for Refugees rider Mike Benjamin

Mike Benjamin

As a GenX kid, cycling was my ticket to freedom, adventure, and mischief. Throughout my high school and early adult years, I competed in running and swimming and I cycled daily. This led to participating in events such as triathlons and rides for various causes. I took a vacation from college at the beginning of my college career and joined the United States Marine Corps to play in the mud for a bit. Apart from cycling, I’ve competed in rock climbing events, and enjoy skateboarding, hiking, diving, and most things outside in the wilder regions

I’m now 45 years old. I still enjoy all aspects of cycling, though these days, I tend to get out on gravel the most.

I met my amazing wife in Kansas City, Kansas where we grew up. Shortly after we hitched our wagons together and started our family, we relocated to Andover, KS, where we raised our two boys. I spend my weekdays as a professional geologist with Burns & McDonnell.

I wasn’t raised in a Christian home. Thanks to my wonderful and persistent wife, Jesus broke through in my early thirties. Shortly, I began directing my efforts towards missions. I’ve served with missions to Peru, Cuba, and various local missions. I’ve volunteered with middle school ministry for many years, and just enjoy helping wherever I can.

I pray daily that God’s will be done and I draw inspiration from the millions of acts of love Jesus provides daily. I’m humbled to be invited to Ride4Refugees and excited to connect cycling with God’s work for “the least of these.”
